New darker shade of Red

I have very slightly changed the colour red I am using, from RAL3001 Signal red to RAL3002 Carmine red – a slightly deeper red, more scarlet looking. I’m seriously pleased with the results!

Just a quick picture teaser update tonight. The panels are not completely finished yet, but I placed them up to the chassis to give an idea what the finished article will look like - not bad!

Advantages over spraying

I was quoted £1500 for a spray job, I could get almost 8 cars painted in this system for one spray job!

I didn’t have to hire a van to get the bodyshell both to and from the sprayers – two lots of van hire

I was also worried about damaging the bodyshell in transit – this way it sits in the comfort of my garage

There is a satisfaction of actually painting your own car – you built it so why pay someone else to spray it?

No spray drip marks / lines – with a roller its simple, and it can’t go wrong!

If you need to only paint a panel at a time, as they go onto the car for example, you can, you don’t have to have all the panels sprayed together and have them sat around potentially getting damaged, as you paint, you fit them to the car, not before they are needed.

Above all else is the simplicity, if you follow what I have written, you can’t go wrong. Remember, you can’t rush a decent paint job, and preparation is the key here, along with lots of patient sanding down. Do as I have done, and a mirror like production car finish will be yours.

The Paint finish

I used the standard Autoglim polish on all the panels, then buffed it off to a high quality “mirror like” finish.

The simplest way of showing the depth of shine is to take pictures of items in the reflection of the paint. It was raining at the time, so the tiny "blobs" are water droplets - nothing to worry about!

I will take some more photos in the next few days, the quality of the finish is excellent!

2nd Coat

I left it for 5 days then applied the second coat. (The paint was very hard indeed by this point). I sanded using 1200 wet and dry with water over the whole car to flatten off the paint ready for the second coat.

The photo's show the nose cone after the 2nd coat. Looking good so far!

1st Coat

Once I was happy with the preparation I mixed the paint 2:1 with hardener and applied the first coat, as per the photo's. It was applied with a standard gloss finish foam type roller. Only mix what you can use in half an hour, the hardener starts to work very well after that period!

Preparation

Preparation is the key to everything when painting.

I used David’s P38 filler on every panel that had the slightest blemish on it, then used 600 wet and dry followed by 1200 wet and dry, (both with plenty of water), to give a super smooth finish.

After this I used a pre paint fluid to remove any grease and grit / bits from the panel.

Deauville Cars Paint System

Here you be able to read about the new paint system from Deauville Cars I will be using on my Sylva Mojo. It is revolutionary new paint system for fibreglass kitcars that is both cheap and easy. An average of £200 to paint a car, and easy as its applied with a roller!
